[edit]Image corruption
[edit]- There is some image corruption in the lower quarter of the photograph. We need a replacement. --MichaelAhlers 10:39, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yes. Great photo, bad scan. Maybe it should be cropped? Jkelly 16:35, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- I dislike the idea of just throwing away data. We need a new scan. --MichaelAhlers 02:52, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Okay. I'll see if Library and Archives Canada will oblige us. Jkelly 02:54, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- I have ordered an 8x10 print. It will take from 6-10 weeks. Jkelly 20:27, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it looks fine on my PC. --Siva1979 20:35, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- You do not notice the image corruption around the ankles of the subjects? Jkelly 20:36, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Interesting. Whatever JPEG parser your browser uses may be rather smart. I loaded this in Photoshop and moved the chunk below the two bands of garbage (that both Jkelly and I see) up. It lines up perfectly with the rest of the image. It would be easily corrected, but as our intrepid friend has already pursed a replacement photograph for scanning purposes, we will enjoy a higher quality copy shortly. (I would submit a corrected image, but JPEG uses a lossy encoding algorithm which means subsequent encodings of existing JPEG image data have greatly diminished quality. I would prefer to keep content here in the highest possible quality for archival purposes.) --MichaelAhlers 03:47, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- Excellent! What did that set you back? Maybe interested parties could wire you a donation via PayPal or other such service. Also, just a general suggestion about scanning it: the more resolution the better. You can rarely go wrong capturing too much data. --MichaelAhlers 03:38, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

- Oh, it wasn't too bad. But I have yet to receive any kind of confirmation that my order has begun to be processed. Jkelly 03:49, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Replacement & reversal
[edit]I just uploaded a new version because the existing one was reversed. As noted earlier, Jkelly's scan was a mirror image of the image on the Canadian Archives site. As I think it's highly unlikely that all three of the subjects were left-handed, I suspect that Jkelly's print was accidentally made from a reversed plate -- and so I just flipped the image and re-uploaded. The image size is larger because I used minimum compression -- there was too much JPEG compression damage to the image already and I didn't want to make it worse.
