[edit]

This image went though debate and several versions before consensus was reached on the version based on the Liberty side of the American Gold Eagle coin. After one user decided to delete the image outright, and another uploaded a new version that was just text pretending to be an image, I started thinking that maybe the Liberty side of the American Gold Eagle coin was not the best option. The problem remains the the two biggest images classically associated with liberty are the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell. Any Statue of Liberty image would lead to confusion because of the Libertarian Party using variations of that iconic image for years. I could find no picture of the Liberty Bell that could be formatted to the dimensions used by most portals without distorting the image beyond recognition, and the Liberty Bell having a natural association with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The current version is based on a Creative Commons licensed photograph titled "freedom ... !"Would you call this version generally acceptable or should we continue to look for another image? --Abel (talk) 04:10, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
