@JoKalliauer: The picture was inspired by a drawing in these lecture notes (see page 19). However, I do not know what the origin of that drawing is - I have checked several books on strength of materials and plasticity, but so far no success. Validity of the picture, or more concretely of the construction used to determine the value of the von Mises stress could be easily checked by utilization of the Pythagorean theorem. 58appank (talk) 18:37, 13 February 2017 (UTC)
