Bonjour.

Need a third colour for portion of journey between Magellan's death and departure from Moluccas

[edit]

This map currently gives the impression that Magellan led the expedition until his death, then Juan Sebastián Elcano took over as leader for the remainder. This is not entirely accurate. There was a complicated succession (over the course of several months), with João Serrão and Duarte Barbosa initially being elected co-commanders, then replaced by Carvalho, then Espinosa. As captain of the Victoria, Elcano effectively became the leader of the return voyage when the Victoria disembarked from the Moluccas in December 1521, leaving the Trinidad behind. I don't think we can convey all that detail in this image, so I'd suggest just having a third color labeled "other" in the legend, which would be used between Magellan's death and December 1521. I took an initial stab at it myself, but I don't see an easy way to do it. The whole 'Elcano' line is one big path (possibly drawn freehand?), and I don't see any way to break it into segments. Perhaps someone more skilled with SVGs could give it a shot? Pinging the creator of the image, @Sémhur: , in case they would be kind enough to assist (or even provide any advice on how this could be done). Colin M (talk) 22:37, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
