Definitions and Consistency???

[edit]

The USA is shown as a country without its capital on the coast, whereas Argentina is shown as a country whose capital is on the coast...

These are both ambiguous cases, as neither is on the open ocean, but both are located on *tidal estuaries*, with Washington, DC on the lower Potomac (where it's an estuary), and Buenos Aires located on the Río de la Plata, also an estuary.

So then, to be consistent, either both should be shown as "on the coast," or both shown as "not on the coast," but either way they should both be the same. -109.40.0.136 10:52, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

And Canada! Ottawa is on a river. Abdullah Al Manjur (talk) 07:26, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I want to add my vote to the idea that the Washington D.C. is for all intents and purposes a coastal city. Technically the US capital boundary is twenty miles from the Atlantic to the east, but the Potomac estuary is essentially an ocean approach to the city; that this is a practical access was proven when the British used it to take the city and burn it in 1814. Twenty miles in on a country 2,500 wide (from ocean to ocean) is mathematically .008, which makes it clear that you can visit the US capital without seeing or traversing any significant fraction of the rest of the country. As an American, I will tell you that more than twenty times in my lifetime, people have seriously discussed with me the idea that the nation should move capital to Colorado so that it is not "on the coast" and easily accessible to future invaders. Should we factor in non-urban parts that belong to cities when deciding whether a capital is on the coast?

Back in 2020, an editor marked Thailand blue on the grounds that one of the city of Bangkok's districts, Bang Khun Thian, is located on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. The edit however, was reverted by another editor nearly a year later on the basis that the main part of Bangkok was located inland.

Likewise, Italy is marked red as the main part of Rome is located inland, however if you include all of Rome's municipal districts, Municipio X of Rome, does have a coastal section. Therefore, should the determination of whether a capital is on the coast be based on the main parts of cities or on the municipalities which belong to the city proper? Riga

[edit]

Only distant suburbs of Riga are technically on the coast - the city itself is not on the coast. H2ppyme (talk) 13:31, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Azerbaijan

Baku is a coastal city, a sea port. @Fobos92, @Somsak Ung, can you correct this? — 2dk (talk) 07:47, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
