Rename discussion
[edit]@Grand-Duc and Erick Soares3: I have protected the file temporarily due to edit warring. Please discuss the rename changes. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 20:07, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Of course, will do. As I wrote on Erick Soares' talkpage in the meantime:
- I do not see that your renaming request is legitimate. Your rationale 4 "harmonization" is not fitting, rather, the rationales "Files should NOT be renamed only because the new name looks a bit better." (dubious, as uppercase writing hampers legibility) and the description of when criterion 4 is applicable ("Just because images share a category does not mean that they are part of a set. There are two scenarios that this criterion is designed for. First, certain complex templates (such as those that use BSicons or that display football kits) assume that the images used in them will follow a specific naming convention. Wikisource also uses a specific naming convention for the source files they transcribe. Second, files that form parts of a whole (such as scans from the same book or large images that are divided into smaller portions due to Commons’ upload size restriction) should follow the same naming convention so that they appear together, in order, in categories and lists.") would be applied. Please stop from editwarring against the renaming denial. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 20:16, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc: none of your arguments really fit this case: this image, like several others, are part of this dataset: https://dadosabertos.tse.jus.br/dataset/candidatos-2024 and Category:TSE electoral portraits of 2024 - so, as it was agreed by uploaders like @Pfcab: , they should follow a name convention, specially because the ID number help us to check the source and its proper licensing (to avoid deletion requests like this one). Pfcab was the one who created this naming style, so it is easy to rename the few bunches of files with different titles than to rename all the thousands he has uploaded. As I said, several images from this and similar datasets from the Supreme Electoral Court have been renamed without any denial and I'd like to ping @Hindustanilanguage: , who has recently renamed two images (and there are several others from the last few days). Thanks, Erick Soares3 (talk) 20:42, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Also pinging @KakuLogia+ and Sailoratlantis: . Erick Soares3 (talk) 20:44, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, I could agree that some ID number is helpful. But is there any true necessity to use upper case lettering? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 20:50, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc: I'm only following the style Special:ListFiles/Pfcab used: he has uploaded so many thousand of images that it is now way simpler to follow his lead than to rename everything he sent. Erick Soares3 (talk) 21:00, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Agree It would be better and more recommendable to keep the standard file name (with a capital letter because of the thousands of uploads Pfcab has made) and use that same standard for future uploads. KakuLogia+ (talk) 21:20, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- OK. I'd like to made a suggestion: as it seems that you're working on a work still in progress, it would be helpful for me or any other filemover to have a reference to your rationale in any renaming request. This reference should mention the Brazilian dataset you're using and, if available, some kind of working list by Pfcab. Maybe something like this: "File naming criterion 4, harmonization over the dataset from .BR-URL uploaded by WORKING LIST PFCAB", change my upper case to anything suitable for you. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 22:19, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc: On this one I wrote this rationale: "To follow the convention from the dataset Category:TSE electoral portraits of 2024: Year - Name in the voting machine - Position - State - City - Supreme Electoral Court - Number ID for source.". I was unsure about adding the dadosabertos.tse.jus.br url because their .ZIP database only lists the ID number (with several .CSV archives to help) - and the number alone wouldn't suffice here. @Pfcab: does you have any working list to avoid future issues? - I just asked for unblocking the file page: you've clearly explained your rationales, thanks for this. I will endorse them. Go ahead with the work! Kind regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:30, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc: thank you very much! I'm also pinging here @Kakulogia+ and Sailoratlantis: who have been uploading a lot of material: the example above may help you guys to avoid future issues with the renaming. Kind regards, Erick Soares3 (talk) 12:01, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

Suggestions I am giving in this discussion on Wikimedia Commons: - For me, whether the photo filenames are in caps lock or not doesn’t make much of a visual difference. What’s more important is that the files on Wikimedia Commons contain at least the candidate's name, the information that the photo was submitted to the TSE (Superior Electoral Court of Brazil), and the identification number (ID) for future reference by the Commons community.
- Additionally, it would be useful to include some relevant links in the description, such as the TSE Open Data Portal (Portal de Dados Abertos do TSE), the TSE-Dados-Abertos template, and the candidate’s profile link on DivulgaCand. I believe that with this information, the photos will be properly described and aligned with copyright policies, helping to avoid any potential restrictions on usage on the site.
