Title |
Zoomorphic D-shaped buckle |
||
Description |
English: Copper-alloy Roman buckle. D-shaped buckle of Hawkes and Dunning Type IB. The upper (curved) edge of the buckle loop contains elaborately cast decoration. From each of the two corners project matching animal heads. These are probably horses, despite their beak-like, downward-pointing noses. They have punched ring and dot eyes and an indented pattern which probably represents a mane. The heads face outwards from the buckle. The remainder of the curved edge of the buckle has fine moulded decoration, including a central pin rest. The sides and bar are undecorated. They have a slightly domed upper surface and a flat reverse. The buckle does not sit flat, but instead is bent upwards on both sides of a horizontal axis point across the middle. This may be related to its use or may be the result of post-depositional damage. The object has a brown patina and is in reasonable condition. It measures 28.6mm wide by 22.1mm deep and 2.7mm thick. The weight is 4.55g. |
