These effectually prevented theBri-tish ships from bringing supplies to Phil-a-del-phi-a. The bombardment, in which the fleet joined, continued until theclose of the 15th, when the works were nearly demolished; the garrison waswithdrawn during the following night. Two days after, the fort at Red Bankwas abandoned, and thus the river was open to the Bri-tish. Wash-ing-tonestablished his winter quarters at Val-ley Forge, on the Schuyl-kill, 20 milesfrom Phil-a-del-phi-a, while Howe kept his army within a strongly fortifiedline extending from the Del-a-ware to the Schuyl-kill.
