Summary
[edit]DescriptionYe Olde White Harte, Kingston upon Hull - geograph.org.uk - 214614.jpg |
English: Ye Olde White Harte, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Dating from the 1550s, Ye Olde White Harte is certainly one of Hull's oldest and most famous pubs. Invisible from the roadside it can only be reached from a narrow alleyway between Silver Street and Bowlalley Lane. Tradition has it that in an upstairs room here, now known as the Plotting Parlour, Sir John Hotham resolved to bar King Charles from the town in 1642, an act which signaled the start of the English Civil War and ultimately cost Sir John his head. There is however no historical evidence to support this. The pub's oldest regular is 'Freda', the resident ghost whose boney features apparently look down on unsuspecting drinkers in the saloon bar. The really weird thing about that is no women were allowed in the place until 1969. |
