There were no starters amongthe sloops, probably for the reason that as against the Maria and Una no vesselstood a chance, and it was labor lost, andmoney thrown away, to fit them for a race.Previous to this race of November 3, how-ever, viz.^ October 31, 1848, there was amatch between the sloops Una and Ultraover the club course. The Ultra was 65tons, the Una but 39 ; and size told inthose days as now, and the allowance of 17minutes 15 seconds which the Una gotwas not enough for her. The Ultra, thenowned by Mr. C. B. Miller,won by 15 minutes. Next year, 1849, there wasno race until the regular Juneregatta, which occupied twodays, June 5 and 7. On thefirst day the course was theregular one, but the secondday the start was off RobbinsReef, and the yachts wentaround the Sandy Hook light-ship for the first tim.e. TheMaria came in ahead on thefirst day, but was disqualifiedon account of fouling theUltra. On the second daythe prizes were $50 for each

Evidently a voyage aroundthe lightship was looked upon with somedistrust by the yachtsmen of 1849. TheMaria came in ahead, but lost on allowanceof time to the schooner Cornelia. TheSybil, of course, had a walk over. In those days, how-ever, this going aroundthe lightship was con-sidered a great feat, andby many, a most im-prudent proceeding.
