Description
English: The Wyoming National Bank Building, 24 West Market Street at South Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, September 2020. The "oldest and most patrician of Wilkes-Barre's banking houses" (to borrow the words of the Society of Architectural Historians) was headquartered in this appropriately majestic if surprisingly modestly scaled Neoclassical edifice from 1914 (the year of its construction) until 1985 (when the company folded into the Allentown-based Merchants Bank). Such handsome details as a Doric-style frieze just below the roofline with metopes ornamented with circular reliefs, a parapet above bearing the inscribed name of the bank on the front façade and a partial balustrade on the sides, and a multistory arched window facing West Market Street flanked by pairs of engaged Doric columns point to the influence of the White City movement on this and the other period buildings in downtown Wilkes-Barre's "banking triangle" situated at this corner. The building is now mixed-use, housing Bronco's Vault Brazilian Steakhouse on its ground floor and apartments above.
