Deutsch: Friedrich Wilhelm III. (1770–1840), ab 1797 König von Preußen. Friedrich Wilhelm heiratete 1793 Luise zu Mecklenburg-Strelitz, die er in Frankfurt am Main kennen und lieben gelernt hatte. Mit ihr hatte er zehn Kinder. Königin Luise starb früh (1810) an einer schweren Lungenentzündung. 1824 heiratete Friedrich Wilhelm III. Auguste Gräfin zu Harrach, Fürstin von Liegnitz in morganatischer Ehe, die kinderlos blieb.
Der Anblick der durch Krankheit, Verwundung und schlechte Versorgung geschwächten Soldaten im Koalitionskrieg von 1792 gegen das revolutionäre Frankreich hatte sich dem 27jährigen Kronprinzen tief eingeprägt. Als Napoleon den europäischen Kontinent eroberte, versuchte er deshalb, Preußen neutral zu halten. Schließlich stand Preußen isoliert da und stolperte 1806 mit seiner Armee, die „auf den Lorbeeren Friedrichs des Großen eingeschlafen war“ (Königin Luise), in die Katastrophe von Jena und Auerstedt. Das Herrscherpaar floh nach Königsberg. Im Frieden von Tilsit (1807) verlor Preußen die Hälfte seines Staatsgebietes. Von Königsberg aus ließ der König seine Minister Graf Hardenberg und Reichsfreiherr vom Stein überfällige innere Reformen im Staat durchführen: Agrarreform, Gewerbefreiheit, Judenemanzipation, Heeresreform, allgemeine Wehrpflicht, Gründung der Berliner Universität. 1813-1815 befreite sich Europa von Napoleon. Nach dem Wiener Kongress reichte Preußen nun von Aachen bis Königsberg. Schinkel gab Berlin ein neues Gesicht, 1830 wurde das Alte Museum gegenüber dem Schloss eröffnet. Wirtschaftlich und kulturell lebte Preußen wieder auf, aber politisch fügte sich Friedrich Wilhelm III. als König der kleinsten Großmacht in die von Österreich bestimmte Strategie der Restauration. Es begann die Verfolgung der „Demagogen“. Das Verfassungsversprechen von 1813 wurde verdrängt. Gemälde von Christoph Wetzel (um 2000). |
