Eingangsportal Rathaus Elberfeld am Neumarkt, Wuppertal, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Februar 2016


Das vom Berliner Architekturbüro Reinhardt & Süßenguth seit 1895 der ausgehenden Neugotik bzw. des Eklektizismus errichtete Rathaus wurde am 24. Oktober 1900 vom Kaiser Wilhelm II. und seiner Gattin zusammen mit der Wuppertaler Schwebebahn und der Barmer Ruhmeshalle feierlich eingeweiht. Es ersetzte das alte Elberfelder Rathaus, in dem wenig später eine Kunstsammlung, das heutige Von der Heydt-Museum, untergebracht wurde.

Die Portalfiguren Wahrheit und Gerechtigkeit wurden von Heinrich Günther-Gera gestaltet und erst 1901 dem Bau hinzugefügt. Sie verschwanden während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Im Jahr 2010 wurden die Figuren nach dem Vorbild der Plastiken restauriert, die Günther-Gera für den Stadtverordneten-Sitzungssaal des Rathauses Charlottenburg gestaltet hatte. Die neuen Figuren wurden nach Fotos gestaltet von Schwan Kamal.

Nachdem im Jahr 1929 die Städte Elberfeld, Barmen und weitere bis dahin selbständige Städte zur neuen Großstadt Wuppertal zusammengeschlossen wurden, wurde der Sitz des Stadtrates und der Hauptsitz der Stadtverwaltung in das Barmer Rathaus verlegt. Heute ist im Elberfelder Rathaus die Sozialverwaltung untergebracht.

Die Fassade besteht aus Londorfer Basaltlava, die Gliederungen und die Verzierungen aus Sandstein.


Die Architekten Heinrich Reinhardt und Georg Süßenguth haben u.a. auch die Berliner Rathäuser Charlottenburg, Steglitz, Treptow und Spandau sowie den Hamburger Hauptbahnhof entworfen
