Title
English: Wreck of the "Princess May," August 5, 1910
Description
English: Before the 20th century, there were many shipwrecks in Alaskan waters. Channels were unmarked, and many ships ran aground in the thick fog. One of the most spectacular wrecks of 1910 was the Canadian Pacific Railway steamer "Princess May," which hit a reef near Sentinel Island, south of Skagway. The "Princess May" was refloated and repaired, and was back in service in 1911.

This photo, taken at low tide, shows the "Princess May" high and dry on the rocks south of Skagway, Alaska. This dramatic photo was sold widely on souvenir postcards.
