Summary
[edit]DescriptionWorking face, Sproxton South Quarry - geograph.org.uk - 702915.jpg |
English: Working face, Sproxton South Quarry The lower north face of the quarry shows the massive, blocky characteristics of the Middle Jurassic Lincolnshire Limestone Formation. Jurassic deposits exposed in this group of quarries include the northern limits of the Northampton Sand ironstone which was of high economic importance in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is overlain by the Lincolnshire Limestone, which probably represents the northcrn most occurrence of the Middle Jurassic carbonate platform in Europe. Both the ironstone and limestone are important building stones in eastern England and have been exploited since Roman times. This quarry and the Sproxton North Quarry are also important geologically for their examples of rare ammonites and other features and are protected against landfill because of this. |
