Summary
[edit]DescriptionWoolwich Common, disused drinking fountain - geograph.org.uk - 971962.jpg |
English: Woolwich Common: disused drinking fountain The fountain has been stripped of its pipework and basins, leaving just the obelisk, which is a memorial to Robert John Little (died 1861). His epitaph is "sustained by the fountain of living waters, he devoted himself to the honour of God and the relief of human suffering". On two sides of the obelisk are quotations from the Bible relating to drink : Proverbs 20:1 condemning drunkenness, and John 4:13-14 where Christ calls himself the 'living water'. It is listed grade 2, and on English Heritage's 'buildings at risk register' because of its poor state of repair. |
