[edit]DescriptionWoody Dicot Stem- Lenticel Development in Sambucus - 36421590740 03.jpg |
English: cross section: Sambucus stem
magnification: 100x Berkshire Community College Bioscience Image Library Lenticels are interruptions in the impermeable corky phellem that allow for transpiration and gas exchange. They form below and around sub stomatal cavities very early in periderm development. Parenchyma cells around substomatal cavities loose their chloroplasts, and rapidly divide to produce large round masses of thin walled complementary cells. Rapid growth of complementary cells exerts upward pressure on the epidermis, causing it to rupture. Exposed cells in the rupture site die off and are continually replaced by activities of the phellogen. In older stems, loose complementary cells become interspaced with layers of flat tightly packed closing cells, producing protective end of season closing layers that block the lenticel during the winter. With the return of the growing season increased production of closing cells re ruptures the closing layer and re-opens the lenticel. Technical Questions:bioimagesoer@gmail.com |
