[edit]DescriptionWooden church in Botiza 02.JPG |
English: Wooden orthodox churche in Botiza / Maramureş in north of Rumania / EU. EU-information board: Operation Villages Roumains (1997. Financed by European Union - Phare programme for county tourism co-ordinated by Romanian Villages Operation): This church dates from 1699, but was originally in Vişeu de Jos. It was brought to Botiza at the end of the 19th Century, replacing an earlier church here. In plan, the naos and pronaos make up a rectangle, from which the polygonal sanctuary apse protrudes. At the west end there is an open porch which is larger than is usual in Maramureş churches. The roof has eaves at two levels, the lower eaves being continuous all round the building. A bell tower with a gallery and a slender spire rises above the pronaos. Note the door frame at the entrance, which is decorated in the style of a Maramureş gate, and the twisted rope motif carved around the church. In 1899, after the church had been brought to Botiza, the interior was restored and painted by Dionisie luga and his daughter Aurelia, painters from Nicula (a centre of traditional religious painting near Gherla in Transylvania). The painting consists largely of floral motifs. The iconostasis paintings are probably older than those on the walls. Note on the inside of the entrance door, the painting of Death with a scythe accompanied by several moralising inscriptions (by an unknown artist). Français : Eglise en bois à Botiza (Maramureş, Romania). |
