English: Between 1910 and 1920, the number of cars in the United States grew from under 500,000 to over eight million. Along with this came an interest in exploring and roughing it beyond the reach of the railroad. Instead of staying in crowded hotels, many hardy tourists camped by the side of the road, preferably near a handy supply of water for bathing, drinking and cooking.
This photo of an automobile camper was taken around 1918 in western Washington State. The woman stands by her car and a nearby lean-to. Her wooded campsite is at the edge of a body of water. Food and utensils cover the top of a collapsible table and several pots sit on the grille over the nearby campfire.
