The character which theAlbanians maintain toward their mas-ters is the exact counterpart of the dis-position of the ancient Greeks in likecircumstances. The craft and deceptiveexploits of the old race are reproducedin the duplicity and treachery of theirmodern descendants. It must be re-membered, however, that these qualitiesof character do not involve the sameturpitude when employed against theTurks as when exhibited in the conductof Western peoples in their intercoursewith each other. And it must also beborne in mind tliat the Albanians aremuch more open and franjv than are themodern Greeks.
