Summary

[edit]
Description Built in 1900 and expanded in 1908, this Beaux Arts-style flatiron building was designed by Gordon and Paunack to house the Commercial National Bank, and is known as the Wisconsin Building. The building is flatiron-shaped with a curved corner, and features stone cladding on the first floor at the corner and along the State Street facade, with stone cladding featuring fluted doric engaged columns on the first floor, large storefront windows and entrances, a prominent corner entrance with a decorative metal grille above, a cornice at the top of the first floor stone cladding with the words “Commercial Bank” and “Bank” emblazoned on the architrave. Above the first floor and along Carroll Street, the building is clad in red brick with one-over-one windows and decorative brick trim and stone lintels, with curved tripartite windows on the curved corner separated by fluted pilasters, a metal fire escape mounted on the Carroll Street facade, an entrance on Carroll Street surrounded by stone trim with the words “Office Entrance” engraved into the header, and a cornice with dentils at the top of the fourth floor, at the base of the parapet that encloses the building’s low-slope roof. The building is a contributing structure in the State Street Historic District, listed on the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places.
