Summary
[edit]DescriptionWingate Sandstone (Lower Jurassic; Cold Shivers Point, Columbus Canyon, Colorado National Monument, Colorado, USA) 6 (23976979685).jpg |
Quartzose sandstone in the Jurassic of Colorado, USA. Colorado National Monument is a colorful and scenic park just southwest of the town of Grand Junction in western Colorado, USA. It's located in the northeastern part of the Colorado Plateau Physiographic Province, a large section of continental crust that was significant uplifted during the Cenozoic. The rocks in the park are gently folded into a large monocline that has been erosionally dissected into a series of dramatic canyons. The cliff shown above is the major scenery-making stratigraphic unit in Colorado National Monument. This is the Wingate Sandstone (Lower Jurassic). It consists of eolian quartzose sandstones deposited in an ancient sand dune field. The reddish-colored rocks at the bottom are hematitic shales and siltstones of the Chinle Formation (Upper Triassic). Above the massive cliff-forming Wingate Sandstone is an interval of light-colored, thin-bedded sandstones - the Kayenta Formation (Lower Jurassic). Locality: Cold Shivers Point, Columbus Canyon, southeastern Colorado National Monument, southwest of the town of Grand Junction, west-central Mesa County, far-western Colorado, USA |
