Summary
[edit]DescriptionWindow Frame, design by Hans Holbein the Younger.jpg |
English: Design for a Window Frame. Pen and ink and brush, grey wash, over preliminary chalk drawing. 26.3 × 10.1 cm, Kunstmuseum Basel. The design shows only the left-hand side of the window frame, the other side assumed as a mirror image.
"Both the skilfully and confidently applied wash, which lends the motifs a sculptural, three-dimensional quality, and the strokes showing the most subtle vibrations, give the motifs a convincing presence. Charles Patin (1676) used the motif of the frame for the border of the frontispiece of his edition of Erasmus of Rotterdam's Stultitiae laus" (Müller, 410). |
