Summary
[edit]DescriptionWilloughbyArms (Ancient).png |
English: Arms of Willoughby (ancient): Or fretty azure. These arms are blazoned in the Caerlaverock Roll (1300) for Robert de Willoughby, 1st Baron Willoughby (d.1317) of Eresby in the parish of Spilsby, Lincolnshire. He sometimes bore his maternal arms of Beke: Gules, a cross moline argent (G. E. Cokayne, The Complete Peerage, n.s., Vol XII/2, p.658, note a). His male descendants Barons Willoughby of Eresby and Baron Willoughby de Broke both adopted the Beke arms in lieu of Willoughby ancient, as is visible on the effigies in Spilsby Church (Willoughby of Eresby) and in Callington Church, Cornwall (Robert Willoughby, 1st Baron Willoughby de Broke, quartered by Ufford). Later Barons Willoughby of Eresby, descended from him in female lines, for example the Berties, reverted to Willougby ancient, the fretty arms. |
