Summary
[edit]The Williams Field snow runway is located on the Ross Ice Shelf near McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The airfield is known locally as "Willy Field." The runway services ski-equipped aircraft during summer months. The airfield is named in honor of Richard T. Williams, a U.S. Navy equipment operator who drowned when his D-8 tractor broke through the ice in 1956. This patch was designed by ENS J. B. Hall, CEC, USN in the Summer of 1978 between his two deployments to Williams Field as its Public Works Officer. It depicts an LC-130 ski-equipped Hercules transport aircraft operated by Navy Squadron VXE-6 and a Caterpillar LGP D-8 bulldozer, the same model of tractor that Richard Williams was operating when he lost his life, still in use at Williams Field in 1978. Because the patch was created by an officer of the U. S. Navy in the performance of his official duty it should be considered in the public domain.
