Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The William L. Jones House, 283 Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, March 2021. The French Second Empire style of architecture was nearing the apex of its popularity around the time of its construction (1875), and the Jones House is a quintessential example of the aesthetic with its straight-sided, slate-tiled projecting mansard roof that's undergirded with scroll modillions and punctuated by a trio of arched dormers adorned with keystone voussoirs. Interesting as well is the soupçon of Georgian influence visible around the front entrance, which is framed by a projecting broken pediment head, entablature, and stylized pilasters which in turn are surrounded by a fanlight and a pair of narrow sidelights. Longtime owner William Lodowick Jones (1840-1927) was a prominent attorney; he lived in the house until shortly before his death in Ithaca.
