Throughthe greatest depth of the Polar night, the officers, dur-ing the brief twilight, had taken a regular walk oftwo or three hours, although never longer thana mile lest they should be overtaken by snow-drift.There was a want of objects to diversify this walk.A dreary monotonous surface of dazzling white cover-ed land and sea: the view of the ships, the smoke as-cending from them, and the sound of human voices,which through the calm and cold air was carried toan extraordinary distance, alone gave any animation tothis wintry scene.
