Description William D. Washington, artist and Virginia Military Institute faculty member. He is best known for his painting "Burial of Latane." William D. Washington was hired by Virginia Military Institute in 1869 to serve as Professor of Fine Arts and to paint portraits of notable VMI alumni who were killed in the Civil War. He died suddenly in 1870, before completing this project.
