ul lakes. Ourreturn journey was made down the Rhine toCologne, and then on to Brussels, arriving there inthe midst of the municipal elections. The citizenswere so excited that at midnight the soldiers hadto be called out to disperse the mob. In succeeding years I confined my annual toursto England, and visited in succession Devon andCornwall, the Lake district, Yorkshire, and theeastern counties. In the year 1892, however, having now reached eighty years of age, I had astrong desire to once more visit Italy, feeling thatif I were to put it off any longer I might never seethat wonderful country again. So early in April Istarted off with my wife on my last foreign tour tobid farewell to the many picturesque old townswhich had raised so much enthusiasm within memore than half a century ago. We crossed fromDover to Calais, and travelled all night direct toBasle. On the next day I went to the market-place and made some sketches of the picturesque DUNSTER CASTLE (1847)(Size 101 X I4 inches.)

AT GREAT MISSENDEN 145 fruit and flower stalls with umbrellas over them. From Basle we proceeded to Lucerne, Milan, andVerona, stopping at each place to make sketches. Finally we arrived at Venice and put up at our oldquarters, Hotel Europa, facing the Grand Canal, where I had first stayed in 1840 and on eachsubsequent visit. On the evening of our arrivalthe hotel was serenaded by a party of singers ina gondola lit up by Chinese lanterns. Theirsinging was charming, and as they rowed away, followed by hundreds of other gondolas, themusic became fainter and fainter until lost inthe distance—a fairy scene only to be witnessedin Venice. After a fortnight of perfect enjoy-ment, intermingled with the pleasures of sketching, spending our days chiefly in a gondola, and visit-ing the Lido and the glorious shores of theAdriatic, we reluctantly left Venice, for myself atleast for the last time, and proceeded to Bologna.Whilst here we witnessed a May Day meetingof Socialists. There was much disorder
