Description

Nederlands: Gruuthuse, was in de middeleeuwen een zeer aanzienlijke familie uit Brugge. De familienaam, een samentrekking van de woorden Gruyt en Huse, laat geen twijfel bestaan over de herkomst van hun fortuin. Bijna ieder huishouden brouwde in de middeleeuwen zelf zijn bier, en dit op basis van het Gruyt. Gruyt was een mengsel van verschillende kruiden, waarmee men het bier smaak en aroma gaf. Op dit Gruyt werd belasting betaald in de vorm van gruytrechten ten bate van de landheer of stad. In Brugge was de familie Gruuthuse eigenaar van het huis waar het Gruyt werd opgeslagen en hadden zij een monopolie verworven voor het innen van de alle gruytrechten in hun stad.
