This is a scan from a slide.
On our first drive up to Whitney Portal, in 1999, I stopped along the road to get this shot. Whitney is in the middle of the picture, the tall peak behind the three spires. It is the tallest peak in the lower forty-eight states.
I headed up there again this year, but turned around as I didn't like the condition of the road. It seems not to have been maintained well.

Once you get to Whitney Portal (at 8,000 feet) you can camp and start your trek to the top. There is a 25-mile round trip hike involved and then a climb of six thousand feet to the top.
