| Description |
Something that cannot be found in the real Venice: a white gondola. As gondolas in Venice were a means of transportation for the affluent, it had been common for different owners to spend a fortune painting their gondolas in distinctive colors for bragging rights. To prevent such spendthrift ways, an ordinance was eventually passed requiring all gondolas to be plain black. Even today, when gondolas are more of a tourist attraction, the ordinance still is in effect. But in this fantasy Venice half a world away in the American Desert Southwest, anything goes, including a white gondola. And of course, unlike a real Venice gondola with six seats, this smaller model seats only four - though they are laid out in two pairs, unlike the real Venice gondolas which have only one pair plus four solo seats. |
