White-winged dove sitting on post
Description
35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Columbiformes; Family: Columbidae; Genus: Zenaida; Genus species: Zenaida asiatica. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 30 cm; Identification: The plumage of the white-winged dove is brownish-gray. Their wings are black with a broad diagonal white bar. Its tail is rounded with whitish corners; Habitat: Rivers, woodlands, urban areas, deserts; Diet: Herbivore: fruit, cactus, nectar, seeds; Reproduction: Nesting may be done in colonies. Each pair lays 1-4 eggs, which are incubated 13-14 days before hatching. Both parents help care for the chicks, feeding them 'pigeon's milk' . A breeding pair may have two to three broods each year; Behavior: White-winged doves forage on the ground and in the trees. They migrate further south in September, returning in March; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Chicks are fed a substance called 'pigeon's milk.' This liquid is produced in the parent's crop (enlarged pocket of the upper esophagus). The walls of the crop secrete the fluid which is rich in protein and fat. When feeding their chicks, parents regurgitate the milk and any food that they have collected.
