[edit]DescriptionWestminster Cathedral - geograph.org.uk - 785355.jpg |
English: Westminster Cathedral The Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral is dedicated to "The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ" - which must be one of the longest dedications for any place of worship in Britain.
This arresting building was designed by the Victorian architect John Francis Bentley, and it was constructed at the turn of the last century, between 1895 and 1903. It is in an unusual style for a British church owing more to the Byzantine style more popular in the Eastern Church. The campanile (bell tower) is reminiscent of ones seen in Italy, such as in Florence or Siena. The inscription, in Latin, above the Romanesque arch reads "Domine Jesu Rex et Redemptor per Sanguinem Tuum Salva Nos" - which I think translates roughly as "Lord Jesus, King and Redeemer, through Your Blood You save us" |
