After breakfast we turnedthe horses out, Allison going to herd them.It was too sloppy to visit our beaver traps,so Bill and I remained at home. It waspleasant to go out once more and potterabout the place in our shirt sleeves and feelthat balmy warm wind blowing. Bill stayedclose to the fire place—and the woman—allday. While I was getting dinner I heardhim pleading with her to marry him, andher repeated answer: I do not know; I cannot say; you must talk with my father andmother about it. About midnightI awoke, fancying that I heard a commotionamong the horses in the corral, of which, asI have said, our building formed one side.I got up and struck a light and glancedover at the door jamb where we always hungthe key of the corral gate, it was gone IThe door remained barred. I thought of thewoman, and ran with the light into thestoreroom; there I found a little mound ofearth by the north wall; she haa tunneledunder the bottom log and gone.
