nd also slightly pathetic, in the con-trast between an old bull buffalos ferociousappearance, and the impotence of his attackupon a man on horseback. I once succeeded, with the help of a fellow-hunter, in drivinga bull buftalo some miles toward camp.He had been slightly wounded by one ofour party, and by riding behind him and onone side we moved him at a trot for severalmiles in the desired direction, in order, asmy companion remarked, to please the boysin camp. But the buffalo eventually tiredof the process, and took refuge in a steepgully, out of which nothing would dislodgehim. From the top of the high bank aboveI might have sprung on his back, and couldtouch him with the muzzle of my rifle.Having duly admired his massive propor-tions, and the savage way in which l-e drovehis horns into the bank, we left liim inpeace, and I presume that he recoveredboth his health and his temper within areasonable time. •ON THE EDGE OF THE DESERT WE FOUND OUR FIRST BUFFALO. fhoto taken in 1875 by Capt. J. A. Lockwood. (Note antelope among buflalos at left of picture). 14 WESTERN FIELD and ou which I rode my pony to a completestandstill, was when we were crossing thedesert previously mentioned. We weretraveling with our paclv-train, when wenoticed a solitary old bull-buffalo, one ofthe largest I had ever seen, about threehundred yavds ahead of us. My horse wasfresh and 1 promptly gave chase. I wantedto kill that particular bull. By the time Ihad made a start the old monster wasrunning at a lumbering gait along a down-hill stretch of prairie. A single buffalo canrun down hill or over flat ground at a pacethat will beat the best cow-pony that everlived, but uphill his heavy forequarterssoon bring him to bay. It so happened inthis case that the prairie stretched downhillfor many miles, and I never got within ahundred yards of that bull. I have neverfired a stern shot at a buffalo; that is alwaysneedles
