ted that a cer-tain oak brush field on the side of a moun-tain up Stewards Fork was infested withbear, so a hunt was organized with theMinersville Slayer as captain. There wereeight in the party and they packed theircamping outfit on four cayuses and went tothe brush field; they camped on a meadownear by and after supper sat around thecampfire and listened until bed time to thethrilling stories emanating from the prolificbrain of the slayer. Next morning the captain placed his menat intervals of about two hundred yards andordered each man to go carefully throughthe brush field, and to keep as nearly thesame level as possible. His tactics weregood, and his men were in favor of promot-ing him to the rank of general. When allhad been properly assigned, the captain tookup the centre line so as to be as nearly intouch with either flank as possible, and theorder to advance was given. shots were fired; a little later there was asharp skirmish on the extreme left flank.It was evident that the enemy was with-drawing, as the bear does in the present farEastern war. There was nothing more doinguntil the man on the right and above thecaptain climbed out on a protruding cliff toget a view of the situation. He was agreeably surprised to see a bearabout two hundred yards below, eating hisacorn breakfast, and just back about sixtyyards was the captain, apparently creepingup to give bruin a surprise. The man on therock sat down as he supposed to witness ^^. ^- the bear-slaying act done in the most scien-tific manner; he thought his captain wascreeping on the bear to shoot him in the eye,or perhaps he intended to slaughter the bearwith his hunting knife, but the man on therock was sadly disappointed.
