Iheard coyotes chasing rabbits through thebrush, sage hens would rise with a whirr,and a thousand noises of the night, howlsand barks and hoots assailed my ears. For-tunately there was plenty of dry brush nearat hand and I built a good fire, which 1thought would keep coyotes or other unwel-come visitors at a respectful distance. I wassitting with my back to the fire when pres-ently I saw two points of greenish light aboutthirty feet away, this was soon joined by an-other pair, and I realized to my horror thateither coyotes or wolves were watching me;terror made me bold, and when a third pairof eyes joined the other two, I rose and pull-ing a burning stick from the fire hurled it atthe skulking brutes; at the same time lettingout a yell that might have been heard fromthe tomb.
