ke a huge lizzard. Ijiwat, my people ofIon*; ago called him—Ijiwat, the devourer of men I had been watching the professor closelyto see what effect the story would have uponhim. Once I thought that he turned a littlepale, but I may have been mistaken. Atany rate, when Poji was through speakingthe professor simply said: And do thesewhite men actually believe this foolishstory? long journey to Black Lake. From the verybeginning of the trip until the day when weset foot on the shores of Black Lake, wewere continually beset with serious diffi-culties. For the first fifty miles of the dis-tance we were able to travel along roads andpaths. But as we penetrated deeper intothe mountains, both paths and roads disap-peared. SELECTING THE PACK-HORSES. It is true! replied Poji, doggedly. Thefathers of my people did not lie! Nonsense! exclaimed the professor, ad-dressing me in a low tone. Why, the ani-mal which Poji has described is a gregosaur—a creature that has been extinct for atleast five thousand years. His story is prob-ably one that has been handed down fromthe most ancient times. He paused a mo-ment as if buried in thought. And yet,he continued, half to himself, these Indianscan not date further back than two thousandyears. Its very strange, very strange! But, gregosaur or no gregosaur, we atlast had a guide; and within two days wehad secured our pack horses and begun our country became wilder and wilder. Great, towering rocks, almost as high as moun-tains, rose on every side, hemming us incompletely. Through dark forests of oakand pine, through dense thickets of hazeland arrow-wood we slowly and laboriouslymade our way. Every now and then a deer, startled by the unaccustomed sight of menand horses
