orce of men; for the natives, although sub-dued, are very resentful if the whites get toocurious and come near their villages or tres-pass on cultivated ground. Ordinarily one thinks of an agriculturalpeople as being peaceably inclined, but it Isjust the reverse in this case, for the Englishofficials are constantly on the watch and ex-pect trouble at most any moment. is surprised at the direct line they take, go-ing over hill and dale without any attemptto keep on the level; this makes it very hardtraveling, but a Kikuyu seems to pay no at-tention to grades or valleys when he startsto go anywhere. A LYGOMA-NI/ OR HEAD CHIEF, of them growing on the high grounds whilethe sugar-cane, tobacco and bananas growin the valleys. Occasionally during theyear frost will appear at the highest points, but it seldom does any damage. Beside thecereal crops raised by the natives, numbersof goats, sheep ana chickens are seen in va-rious places; a few cattle will be noted also, but they either do not thrive
