Summary
[edit]DescriptionWesterly Granite (Early Permian, 276 to 279 Ma; near Westerly, Rhode Island, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Granite from the Permian of Rhode Island, USA.
Granite is a common igneous rock. It is intrusive (forms deep underground), has a felsic chemistry (= greater than 65% silica content, rich in potassium and sodium, and dominated by the minerals quartz and potassium feldspar), and has a phaneritic texture (relatively large crystals from slow cooling of magma). Many granites also have black-colored amphibole, whitish-gray sodic plagioclase feldspar, and one or more mica minerals (muscovite, biotite). This example comes from the Westerly area of Rhode Island. Cut and polished samples of this material are used in the decorative stone trade - it is nicknamed "Pink Westerly Granite". Geologic unit: Westerly Granite, Early Permian, 276 to 279 Ma Locality: undisclosed / unrecorded site at or near the town of Westerly, southwestern Rhode Island, USA |
