| Description | Westbahnhof, Frankfurt Bockenheim. Der Bahnhof Frankfurt (Main) West ist ein Regional- und S-Bahnhof an der Main-Weser-Bahn im Westen der Innenstadt von Frankfurt am Main, im Stadtteil Bockenheim, nahe der Messe Frankfurt und dem Campus Bockenheim der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. 1845 verständigten sich Kurhesen, das Großherzogtum Hessen-Darmstadt und die freie Reichsstadt Frankfurt am Main zum Bau der Bahn. Der Bahnhof wurde 1848 als Bahnhof Bockenheim an der Strecke der Main-Weser-Bahn (Frankfurt-Kassel) errichtet mit einem Nebengleis zu dem nahen Industriegelände in der Solmsstraße und einem weiteren Nebengleis bis zur Bockenheimer Warte. Die damals noch selbständige Stadt Bockenheim lag bis 1866 auf kurhessischem Territorium. Sie war im Rahmen des Kurfürstentums bedeutend und ihr Bahnhof wurde nach einem Entwurf von Julius Eugen Ruhl mit einem relativ aufwändigen Empfangsgebäude im Stil der Neorenaissance, einschließlich eines besonderen Aufenthaltsbereichs für den Kurfürsten. Dies Gebäude wurde im 2.Weltkrieg durch Fliegerbomben zerstört. |
