Description

Police officers and members of the public have been honoured for acts of bravery and selflessness in the annual West Midlands Police awards ceremony.

More than 30 accolades were presented at the event on Wednesday night (Sept 19) in recognition of outstanding contributions to tackling crime, life-saving first aid, and heroic interventions from members of the public.

Sophisticated drug network linking Birmingham to South America was foiled thanks to an investigation led by two Birmingham police officers – and the pair have now been honoured for their work.

Sergeant David Jagger and PC Alan Reeves, based at Sutton Coldfield police station, exposed a sophisticated operation importing crack cocaine and heroin from Panama to the streets of Birmingham.

Disguised as a legitimate business the drugs were being imported into the country in cans of hairspray.

The drug ring was smashed when Border Agency officers at Coventry Airport intercepted an Erdington-bound box of the specially adapted hairspray cans containing over a kilo of 94 per cent pure cocaine.

Acting on this information, plus concerns raised by community members, police executed a search warrant at an Erdington home where officers unearthed a substantial amount of crack cocaine, heroin and cannabis.

As well as the drugs, officers also found a large amount of cash, mobile phones and drugs paraphernalia in the house and garden shed.

It was estimated that the drugs intercepted at the airport, combined with those seized from the Erdington address had a street value of over half-a-million pounds.

In February 2011, a 42-year-old man from Erdington received a 12-and-a-half-year jail sentence after admitting conspiracy to import and supply cocaine and conspiracy to supply heroin.

A 28-year-old man from Moseley also received a seven year prison term after admitting his part, whilst a 44-year-old Erdington woman received a 13 year sentence following a seven day trial.
