Police officers and members of the public have been honoured for acts of bravery and selflessness in the annual West Midlands Police awards ceremony. More than 30 accolades were presented at the event on Wednesday night (Sept 19) in recognition of outstanding contributions to tackling crime, life-saving first aid, and heroic interventions from members of the public. Four Sandwell PCs who bravely disarmed knifemen during violent domestic disputes have received Chief Constable's Commendations – the highest accolade available to West Midlands Police officers. In one incident on July 2 last year, PCs Wendy Hands and Ross Curtin – responding to reports of a screaming mum and children inside a Smethwick address – were attacked by a man who barricaded himself inside the house. The man – who was later handed a 28-month jail sentence for grievous bodily harm – lashed out at the pair with a knife and at one stage jabbed it into PC Curtin's stab vest. They managed to disorientate the man with CS spray before safely disarming and arresting him with the help of police back-up. Inspector David Southam from Sandwell Police praised the officers' bravery and professionalism. He said: "Both remained calm and put the safety of the woman and children inside the house, who they feared were in serious danger, above their own. Their actions no doubt prevented a far more serious incident. "They suffered cuts and grazes whilst tackling the man and undoubtedly the armour plating in PC Curtin's protective vest prevented more serious injury." |
