The loss of the heaviest part of the French artilleryand the subsequent capture by the British, underSir Samuel Hood (afterwards Viscount Hood), of thefrigate which was bringing a fresh supply fromMartinique augured well for the garrison, but theenemy, nothing daunted, successfully raised many oftheir guns and were also fortunate enough to receivereinforcements from Martinique. De Bouille went about his work in a thoroughlybusiness-like manner, and left nothing to chance.Indeed, he found the adventure attended with somuch difficulty that he carried on his approaches andopened trenches under all the formalities of the mostregular siege/* His headquarters were established atSandy Point, a small town at the foot of the hill, towhich the garrison in the fortress soon set fire, playingupon it so effectively with their heavy cannon andmortars that the French could not extinguish theflames until it was totally consumed. (3 r; THE SIEGE OF BRIMSTONE HILL on the hill, had been left in the Kings Stores close tothe English lines, and on the 14th the picquets seeingthe enemy approaching set fire to it. The precautionhad been taken of spreading the powder out lest theworks and cisterns should be damaged, and so therewas no serious explosion; but some of the buildingsand stores caught fire, including provisions and all theclothing of the 15th Regiment, the carriages of eight24-pounders which had already been spiked, the bedsof two 13-inch mortars, one 10-inch mortar and four8-inch mortars. The events of the succeeding days are best describedby Governor Shirleys journal, from which some ideaof the rigours of the siege may be gathered: Wednesday, Jan. 16. Apprehending that part ofthe enemy were still lodged in the back part of thetown of Sandy Point, the cannonade was repeated fora short time and parties were employed in bringing upmortars that had been spiked from the foot of theHill.
