Summary
[edit]DescriptionWest Hartburn , Medieval (1066-1540) Village - geograph.org.uk - 146662.jpg |
English: West Hartburn : Medieval (1066-1540) Village. The deserted settlement of West Hartburn includes Goosepool, Foster-House Farms. Two rows of cottages with a central well remained in 1823, and according to tradition the chapel and burial ground were at Long Newton or Goosepool. The site of the deserted Medieval village is now marked by turf covered banks and ditches forming low rectangular platforms within open or closed rectangular enclosures. Two hollow ways run to the north and south of the modern road. Excavations between 1962 and 1969 revealed three two-roomed long houses, and two other buildings, a paved central causeway and a sunken road. Dating was from C13, with rebuilding in C16. |
