English: The West Closure Complex underwent the annual testing of its 11 pumps and sector gate May 11, 2023, to make sure everything was operating properly before the start of the 2023 hurricane season. Located approximately one-half mile south of the confluence of the Harvey and Algiers canals on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, the approximately $1 billion project was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, to help reduce the risk associated with storm surge for residences and businesses in three parishes on the west bank of the Mississippi River: Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes. Southeast Flood Protection Authority - West operates and maintains the complex, and the Corps partners with them to provide technical support and assistance as needed throughout the year. |
