Wellington, Wash. following avalanche, 1910 |
||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
Wellington was founded in 1893 near the west end of the Great Northern Railway's Cascade Tunnel. In 1910, the community had a deadly avalanche which swept two trains off the tracks and into a nearby valley, killing 96 people. Shortly thereafter, the area was renamed Tye to avoid associations with the event. The town was abandoned in 1929 when the Cascade Tunnel was completed. This photo shows the deep snow surrounding the Bailets Hotel and Hemrich Bros. saloon.; Wellington, WA |
