Title
Wellington, Wash. following avalanche, 1910
Description
Wellington was founded in 1893 near the west end of the Great Northern Railway's Cascade Tunnel. In 1910, the community had a deadly avalanche which swept two trains off the tracks and into a nearby valley, killing 96 people. Shortly thereafter, the area was renamed Tye to avoid associations with the event. The town was abandoned in 1929 when the Cascade Tunnel was completed.
