These tiny herbivores are known for their ability to decimate plant populations. In order to feed on a variety of plants, the weevils use a specialized organ called a rostrum. Using their trunk-like rostrums, weevils suck the liquids from inside plants. The rostrum is also used to bore holes within plant matter as a place to lay eggs. Despite their reputation as crop destroyers, weevils have recently been used in many areas to control the spread of invasive weeds. In the Yellowstone Area, weevils have been introduced in order to fight knapweed. Weevils will continue to be an important part of pest control in Yellowstone for years to come. |
