Summary
[edit]DescriptionWaverley Station roof - geograph.org.uk - 1944339.jpg |
English: Waverley Station roof, near to Edinburgh, Great Britain.
Classic Victorian railway station roof in the 'Crystal Palace style' with panes of sheet glass held within a framework of iron girders supported by cast-iron columns decorated with moulded capitals. The roof is about to undergo a major restoration which will take an estimated three years to complete. The project is a vast undertaking. Waverley is the second largest railway station in Great Britain (over 25 acres), being orginally a combination of three stations belonging to separate companies: Canal Street Station, which lay on a north-south axis, and the stations of the Glasgow-Edinburgh Railway and the London and North-Eastern Railway meeting at a central concourse. It is estimated that 28,000 panes of glass will be required for the renovation. Link |
